It's a hard-knock 2018
A Free Woman
The last official day of her sentence was on May 25, and she posted a celebratory Instagram photo.
“TIMES UP!!!! So is my sentence!!! Now I have to handle the aftermath/ treatment/ physical rehabilitation of 10 hour emergency spine surgery to remove a mass from strangling my spinal cord and the horrible severity of what that mass turned out to be!” she wrote in the comment.
She’s also made some other big changes since her time in jail. The dancer dropped some serious weight while in prison – in fact, she lost just around 100 pounds during her short tenure in the slammer.
According to the Daily Mail, the star lost all that weight during her time behind bars thanks to a gastric sleeve procedure she underwent to much public controversy just before her sentencing.
“People were saying, ‘But your sentencing is coming up in a couple weeks!’ [… T]hat is true — and I’m really nervous about that, more than the surgery — but, there’s no right time [to get this done],” she explained of her decision in an interview with Entertainment Tonight last year.
The surgery reduced the reality TV star’s stomach by around 80 percent – essentially from the size of a football to a banana.
Abby Lee said that the surgery allowed her to feel “in control” of her life, especially after having spent so much time on Dance Moms, which really limited her own personal agency.
“I felt for seven seasons that someone else was in control of my life — telling me when I could eat and what I could eat and when I could use the ladies’ room,” she admitted. “When you’re so busy shooting 12 hours a day, you just eat what someone sticks in front of you. Now I feel a lot freer and more confident in my everyday activities.”
She added that she hoped the surgery would allow for a fresh start in her life.
“I think this is a good thing, and hopefully I’ll be in the best shape of my life,” Miller said. “That’s what I’m looking for.”
Glamour After the Slammer
The first hints of the star’s new look came in the form of a photo posted to the star’s Instagram in January which showed Abby alongside friends, including longtime ALDC choreographer and teacher Gianna Martello, during what we assume was a super fun prison visit. She captioned the photo with a heartfelt message to her fans:
“Sometimes in life you make mistakes I trusted the wrong people and didn’t pay any attention to things I should of. I’m more than sorry for the mistakes I have made,” the captions began.
“My world flipped upside down when I had to enter prison. I did so with grace, the stories you read about me been a princess are untrue. I have made friends with both inmates and staff, I’ve tried to better myself, participated in anything offered to me and I am a better person for this experience,” she continued, keeping fans and followers updated about her journey.
“All the press stories and speculation are not entirely correct[,] however, I am feeling hopeful but no dates have been confirmed at this time,” Abby added. “I am feeling great and ready to turn over a new leaf thank you so much to everyone for your support especially my nearest and dearest I love you all.”
She also added: “(and yes this is me in prison ),” to sign off on the heartfelt post.
“Me in prison” obviously referred to her brand new look! Abby was glammed up, glowing, and slimmer than most fans have ever seen her. Though the star rarely addressed her weight on television, it’s been hard for fans to ignore Abby’s fluctuations over the years and her apparently silent struggle to keep her weight under control.
Almost A Serious Issue
From that photo and, of course, all the new ones we have now, it’s clear that she’s finally dropped the weight thanks to the help from her doctors.
According to a January 2018 report from Entertainment Tonight, Abby planed to get a tummy tuck as well as excess skin removed when she is released from the system.
However, her surgery was almost undone her hypothyroidism, for which she was showing very severe symptoms. The condition means the thyroid isn’t working properly, which can lead to sudden weight loss, tremors, fatigue, and more.
“If left untreated, it’s been reported people can become comatose,” said Abby’s doctor, Dr. Michael Russo. “This is a serious medical concern.”
“Her hypothyroidism go so severe that she had an assortment of symptoms,” he continued, saying that the celebrity had “bone pain in her back, shoulders, arms and legs.”
He went on to say that another doctor told her to stop taking her thyroid meds in January, but they quickly addressed the issue.
