The Weeknd also seems to touch on Selena’s struggles with mental health. In the song “Hurt You,” he belts out:
All the nights we slept alone, dryin’ your eyes (’cause of me, baby)
And all the nights you thought about takin’ your life (’cause of me, baby)
If it’s love you want again, don’t waste your time (don’t you waste)
Given that his ex even checked herself into rehab for depression and anxiety in January just months after their split, fans are saying that this track is also about The Weeknd and Selena’s doomed relationship.
However, Selena isn’t the only ex the star may be singing about on the new EP. Bella Hadid, who called it quits with The Weeknd in 2016 after almost two years of dating, is also seemingly reference in the lyrics. The line, “You were an equestrian, so ride it like a champion,” appears to be a nod to the 21-year-old model’s past as a competitive horse rider.
“Wasted times I spent with someone else. She wasn’t even half of you,” he sings, which could be interpreted as a shot at Selena.
Doom and Gloom
But not all is bad. The breakup ballad “Privilege” seems to end off on somewhat pleasant note — well, by The Weeknd’s gloom-and-doom standard.
“Enjoy your privileged life ‘Cause I’m not gonna hold you through the night / We said our last goodbyes / So, let’s just try to end it with a smile,” he sings, though he promises that he’ll be back to his “old ways” with drugs and alcohol to cope with the split.
“They said our love is just a game,” he crooned, “I don’t care what they say.”
