Everything is bigger (and more dramatic) in Texas
And Baby Makes Five
The 39-year-old recently opened up about her clan’s newest addition to People, saying that the newborn — a baby boy named Bruin Charles — has changed their lives forever.
“We are obsessed with him, my whole family is,” she gushed. “We’re just so blessed.”
According to the publication, the new member of the family was born prematurely on Dec. 31, 2017 and was adopted through a closed adoption process. The infant measured at 18 inches and weighed 4 lbs., 5 oz., at the time of birth.
The third child, who now joins big sisters Brooklyn, 9, and Brinkley, 6, is a “perfect fit” for the family, Brandi said. In fact, the new mother of three was even surprised that her new son also shares the same strawberry blonde locks that her two daughters had inherited from her.
“It’s crazy,” she said about his uncanny resemblance to the rest of the family. “He’ll always look like he came from me, which he did — he came from my heart.”
Having spent much of the last season of Real Housewives of Dallas hoping for another baby, the Bravo star said she couldn’t be more thrilled about adding to her brood.
“He’s so, so happy,” she shared. “From the moment that I met him for the first time, he just looked straight into my eyes, held my finger as tight as he could, and let out this giant grin. And it’s been like that ever since. He smiles all the time and just giggles and laughs.”
Getting emotional about her new baby, she told the magazine that “the only time he cries is when he’s left alone.”
“I’m sure that’s a normal baby thing, but because of how we got him, I’m especially like, ‘No, you will never be left alone,” she said, getting choked up just thinking about it.
“We Just Immediately Fell In Love”
For the former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, becoming a mother for the third time wasn’t necessarily an easy feat. For one, she had always felt like her family was missing something.
“For a long time, people would tell me, ‘You’ll know when your family is complete.’ And I never felt that way,” she explained. “I’m blessed to have two beautiful children, but even after having them, in my heart, I knew it wasn’t complete.”
“So we tried again for years,” she continued. “But my fertility was on the decline, and in October, Bryan and I said, ‘You know what, we’re not going to even try anymore.’ I turn 40 in July, and there are so many risks. We just said, ‘Our family is fine with the four of us.’ Adoption wasn’t even on our minds, even though one of my own brothers is adopted. We just walked away from it all.”
According to Brandi, she didn’t even think about adopting until early 2018 after coming home from a family vacation. Just days into the New Year, the famous redhead received a called from a friend with connections to a social worker asking if she would ever be interested in adoption.
Bruin’s biological parents were teenagers who awarded him to the state at birth. According to Brandi, the social workers tasked with his placement were having trouble finding him a family — and her friend decided to give her a ring after hearing about the baby.
While Brandi spent years trying for a child, adopting Bruin was a fairly quick process by compariosn.
“It happened pretty much overnight,” Brandi recalled. “He was in the neonatal intensive care unit because he was born prematurely, so we flew out of Dallas — he was still in Texas —and we met him in the hospital. We just immediately fell in love.”
An Instant Connection
She remembered feeling an instant connection with Bruin at the hospital, and how hard it was to say goodbye when they had to leave him.
“That connection was there right away,” she said. “He had to stay in the NICU for a little longer so when we left the hospital and I had to fly back home, I cried for six hours because I was leaving him. I just wanted to be with my son.”
While Brandi kept the adoption from her fans for most of the year, she did allow Bravo cameras capture her baby’s first few weeks at home. According to the mom, she wanted viewers to get a sense of closure after seeing her go through so much during the last season.
“They followed the whole thing from start to finish,” Brandi said. “It’s a beautiful story. It’s crazy because they captured the rollercoaster of emotions we go through.”
The TV personality added she was able to jump back into diaper duties, though there was an adjustment period at first.
“My maternal instinct kicked in so naturally, which is amazing, but you’ll see that I’m having to relearn some things,” she joked.
“Everything changes in the baby world! Everything is a lot easier now, even though I want to make it a lot harder! I’m like, ‘How do I not know how to work these things?’”
As for her son’s unique name, Brandi revealed that coming up with the special moniker was the easiest thing she had to do thus far. After all, she said, she had already chosen it back when she was pregnant with her second child.
“When I was pregnant with Brinkley, the doctor’s said that she was a boy and my husband always loved the name Bruin,” she shared. “My husband’s into sports and I think he’s a UCLA fan [despite the fact that] he didn’t go there. And he just loved that name. So Brinkley was ‘Bruin’ for a little bit until they said, ‘Oh no, it’s a girl.’”
