After what can only be accurately described as a pretty tough year, Shannon Beador is refusing to get knocked down again. The RealHousewives of Orange County dealt with a difficult and public divorce that began back in 2017, and she’s been using that energy to push herself to get back into a serious fitness routine.
Last week, she shared a photo of herself with her trainer, Steven Michael, showing a nice sized hill behind them.
“Walking this beast of a hill every day with my trainer,” she captioned the photo, added that this happened rain or shine. She included a few choice hastags showing her dedication to change, including #committed and #getting thereslowlybutsurely.
Fans quickly offered their support for the Real Housewives lifestyle change.
“Now that’s what you call motivation,” a fan of the entrepreneur wrote.
Another follower encouraged her to keep going, writing, “Looking good Shannon. Keep up the good work and you will reap the rewards.”
“One day at a time, so proud of you,” wrote a separate supporter. “Take the control back!!! I’ve been there and it’s possible.”
A Hard Year
As fans know, the star previously gained around 40 pounds — roughly 40 percent of her body weight — in under a year. During that time, she blamed weight gain on rumors Vicki Gunvalson spread about her now-former husband, David Beador, being physically abusive. To cope with that and the rumors of her David’s infidelity, Shannon turned to food as a coping mechanism.
“Shannon has always been thin … she’s always been a size 0,” Kelly said. “She’s 5’8, my height, 118 or 120 pounds, size 0, and her husband [David] is a workout fanatic. He’s like a Spartan racer — he’s, like, gnarly about fitness and she’s never really worked out. She never had to ever worry about her weight.”
She went on to give her own theories about the physical change in her co-star.
“I think a lot of it is stress, I think a lot of it is hormones, you know pre-menopause going through that, everything slows down and your hormones are kind of out of whack,” Kelly theorized. “I think we all gain or lose weight for whatever reason so I think it has to do with stress and hormones.”
“So Let’s Just Get To It”
Shannon first decided to speak publicly about this physical change on Instagram in the summer of last year, after the premiere of Season 12 of the Real Housewives of Orange County. She wrote, “So let’s just get to it. Yes, I have gained weight. A lot of weight. About 40 pounds to be exact.”
You have to admire Shannon for refusing to beat around the bush.
She continued, saying:
“I have not had plastic surgery or fillers, it’s just plain and simple weight gain. There are multiple factors that have contributed to my size and it will be addressed this season on the show. To those people who intend to write cruel or derogatory comments to me, I want to let you know you will be blocked and the comment deleted. Gaining weight and trying to take it off is a struggle that most women will face at some point in their lives. I am hopeful that my fans and viewers of the show will be supportive of my journey. I am very grateful and thankful to those people that have already reached out to me with their kind thoughts.”
She was right: many women struggle with their weight on and off throughout their entire life due to the many pressures that society puts upon women’s physical images, pressures that we imagine are significantly worse when you’re a celebrity.
Shannon went on to open up about the difficulties she had, showing her weight on camera, which she said has been “nothing but a motivator.”
“[T]hat, coupled with the fact that my trainer informed me that my body fat percentage was basically putting me in the ticking time bomb area where I could have a heart attack or diabetes or that sort of thing, I mean, it was a wake-up call for me,” Shannon said. “So, I’ve been working at it.”
