Marsai Martin is taking Hollywood by storm, and she’s only 15! The actress and producer sat down with Celebuzz! to discuss her career, inspirations, and her new goal of helping kids get the right eye care for them.
The star is known for her signature glasses, and she wants kids to feel confident in their own pair. “When I was younger I’d have to sit in front of the class, because of course when you can’t see you have to sit in the front,” Martin said. “Then I got my glasses and my parents actually saw the struggle that I had, I actually went to the right eye doctor, got an eye exam, and got a new pair of glasses.”
She said a big hurdle was learning how to be confident in her new look, “I had to be confident in my glasses to make sure I was proud of myself with my new style and my new look,” said the actress. “Now that I’m on a show and now that I’m a producer…that is kind of what I’m known for.”
Martin wants to inspire young kids to follow suit and embrace their need for proper eye care—glasses shouldn’t be something you’re embarrassed to have!
Her own experiences with her eyesight really inspired her with this project. “People usually think that glasses are meant for style than actually what’s inside the lenses,” said Martin. “The cool thing is those who play will get a chance to win free glasses for their child and their entire school.”

Since Martin is such a young star, she isn’t just a role model for other children, she’s also their peer. We asked her what advice she has for other young artists who might be afraid to promote their own ideas.
“Don’t!” she laughed. “Just believing in yourself and being confident in who you are just uplifts everything.”
“And if you don’t feel that confident, talk to someone who will probably love your ideas like your friends or parents or someone you honestly trust,” advised Martin. She found the best way to overcome fear and boost your confidence is to find someone that will help guide you through your struggles and talk through your emotions.
“If you really want to do it, you just go for it. There is nothing stopping you,” she said.
Although that might be easier said than done, Martin has learned from the best. Her time on Black-ish has allowed her to learn from the adults around her, and to really observe how they handle their careers.
She started on the show at only 9 years old, but said the entire experience has been “amazing.”
